OUR BRANDS

WINE

A husband and wife run, small-batch, artisan wine producer based in the Hunter Valley, NSW.

Growing up in the Hunter, winemaker Daniel has long been passionate about both wine and food. After completing several vintages at local wineries whilst studying teaching, Daniel realised a career change could be in his future. The undeniable pull to the wine industry saw Daniel later undertake a winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University. During his studies he completed further vintages in the region whilst developing his own individual style of winemaking which he brings to the Dirt Candy brand.

Daniel's wife, Jenni, brings design and marketing expertise to Dirt Candy (as well as her unofficial role of keeping Daniel's ideas and plans in check!) Daniel and Jenni are joined by their three children, who provide constant inspiration for the Dirt Candy wine styles and endeavour to drink as much grape juice as possible during vintage.

Although based in the Hunter, we love expressing the individual characteristics of different locations. We source quality grapes from many stunning wine growing regions in Australia to create wines that reflect the vineyard from which they came.

Each of our wines are handmade in small-batches, ensuring that we maintain a high level of control throughout the winemaking process.

Winemaking couple Damien Stevens & Jodie Belleville, along with partners Daniel & Elle Hart are the hands behind Phat Wine Company's Hart & Hunter brand.

Their passion to find a great patch of dirt producing classic Hunter Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz, created the trophy wining first release of their wine.

Determined to start with an impact and after waiting for the right vineyard sites to show themselves, the partners secured their first Shiraz in 2009, following with Semillon in 2010. The wait was worth it, with the first release of the Oakey Creek Semillon, taking two trohpy's in the 2010 Hunter Valley Wine Show before it was even released.

Damien & Jodie now manage the business in Australia after the opening of their Cellar Door in the middle of 2014, and together run the winemaking, cellar door and direct sales for the business. Dan and Elle fly the flag for Hart & Hunter in the UK & Ireland, looking after UK distribution, along with holding tastings and promotional events for Aussie Wines.

Hand picked, hand crafted and proudly Hunter Valley.

BEER & CIDER

Holgate

The Holgate story really starts in 1987 when 19 year old Paul and Tash met at Uni, fell in love, got married, travelled the world and were inspired …. Resulting in a vision and passion for good beer, good food , good wine – all the good things in life! The early days of their microbrewery start-up in 1999 were crazy times – starting a family at the same time as a commercial brewing operation in the back-yard of their Woodend home was far from easy!. With baby’s in tow, Tash would deliver kegs of beer to local Central Victorian pubs, while Paul would return from his Melbourne day job each night to fill kegs, clean tanks and brew on the weekends!

From 2002, the business further put down its’ roots in Woodend and the Macedon Ranges taking over the historic local hotel to become both the cellar door and production base for the business – this continues today with a massive investment in beer making with a state-of-the-art brewing facility now right alongside the Holgate hotel and hospitality business.

From humble beginnings in the backyard, the business now supports 40 employees including 25 full-time – while the brewery, bar, restaurant and accommodation has a long tradition of supporting local wineries, providores and growers.

The adventure of « Fils de Pomme » (Sons of Pømme) brings together two friends, each with a personal story about cider :

Théo comes from a long line of naval officers of the French Navy dating back 1780, as well as a traditional cider-making family since the end of the XIXth century. Great lovers of cider, they consumed as much at sea as the would at home.

Valentin, was caught, early in his childhood, by the « cider virus » during summers spent in Britany at his grandparents. They made him taste the small family production made from apple grown in the orchards, protected from Britany harsh weather by high granite walls.

Each on their own, they have ever since their childhood enjoyed cider, beginning with the sweeter kinds, before quickly reaching the Brut.

Later on, the two friends met on the benches of the university and realize that they spent their summers 5km away from each other, in Britany, and shared the same passion – cider. This was followed by numerous trips to Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian countries.
They quickly realized how successful « cider » was. It is consumed as a real alternative to beer, both for men and women.

Yet the « cider », turns out to be a product of lower quality. It is made from apple concentrate, with added sugars and artificial fermentation.
So far from the values of French cider, produced 100% naturally, without added sugar. That’s when they realized the gold they have in their hands …

On his return, Théo decided to create the « botanical cider », with the idea of preserving the know-how and quality of the French cider, while infusing it with a new youth. The goal is to make it much more subtle and more refreshing, using an entirely organic cider base … Valentin specialized in corporate finance but in love with cider, decided to stop everything and concentrate on designing a « new cider  ».

A necessity was born: to give a new life to this product, modernizing it while keeping a high quality product, made in France, and respecting the French gastronomic heritage!
This is how the two « crazy ciders » embarked on the adventure “Fils de Pomme” (Sons of Pømme), the french botanical cider!
